Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
High on the hilltop, Aubeterre is an
absolute gem. One of the "Les Plus Beaux Villages" (most beautiful villages)
of France.
The village has many artist's studios,
a puppet theatre and the museum of butterflies (all 12,000 of them!).
The lively village square is the perfect place to relax and enjoy an
bottle of the local wines.
The fascinating monolithic
(subterranean) church of St. Jean carved out of the cliff is a must see.
With a 20m high underground nave and necropolis containing over 100
sarcophagi.
The village has several excellent
restaurants, for a true French gastronmique experience a visit to the
Hostellerie-du-Perigord is a must - Chef/Owner Fabrice Morel is
constantly pushing the boundaries of French cuisine.
Another very popular restaurant in Aubeterre's market square is
Fortuno. Owned and run by former "EastEnders" star Sid Owen.
What many people visit for is the river
beach, for safe swimming, tennis, snacks and canoe hire.
